Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), by Silent Guardian

A hired African American killer, who lives under the "Hagakure" Code of the Samurai, is hired for the murder of a mobster. During the execution of the contract, an eyewitness is there, creating a problem in the evolution of the murder. From this moment onwards, the bosses want him dead ...
Live by the Code, die by the Code. Jim Jarmush takes a hit at contemporary ethics and criminals, with a  touch of melancholy, within the meaning of fine lines and balances. Modern-era hitmen, Samurai ethics, hip hop and Black culture and the shaky ethics of living outside and against the law. For real people with real values only.
Forest Whitaker probably gives his life-time quality performance. Balancing gracefully through Jim Jarmush's ironic, poetic and smart scenes under the sounds of old-school hip-hop RZA-style, Whitaker is the Last Samurai way before Tom Cruise. Flanked by John Tormey, Isaac De Bankole and Camille Winbush, he really gets him message through : Do not be compatible with any new reality and always choose a law and a code to live by.
Must watch this : on a regular September afternoon with a cup of green tea. After the film, spend some time meditating on some tripped-out tunes like that and then go out and look for a reason to beat down a random motherfucker that deserves it. The only way to let off steam!

Venus in Furs (1969) a.k.a Paroxismus

A jazz musician witnesses the assault of a young woman at a millionaire's party. The next day, he finds her dead at the beach and confused, he leaves for Rio where he lives with a young female singer. Unexpectedly, he meets a woman much like the victim and he starts to pursue her to find out who she is...
When heavy psychoactive substances interact with a flow of smooth jazz and Jess Franco interferes, then you get something like this film. The lack of exact continuity creates a mood of trippy haze and with the nostalgic and sensual scenes that only Franco can create, Venus in Furs is sure to take you away from your personal and into another. 60's, drugs, parties, music and travels...
The cast is, as usual in early Franco's films, totaly off the hook. Maria Rohm, Barbara McNair, James Darren and Klaus Kinski giving a truly great dramatic performance. Grasping the dopy mood of the film from the balls, the actors dive themselves so deep in their characters that it is like like living the experience in reality.
Must watch this : on a Saturday, right before you go to a house party, with a glass of Southern Comfort. At the party, try to get as wasted as you can and don't leave until someone is dead or it is already 12 of the next morning. In the early morning hours that everyone is exhausted and wasted, set the mood with that jammy shit and some joints.

Valhalla Rising (2009)

One-Eye. a mute Norse warrior, is held captive by a Norse chieftain and used as a fighter for his bets. When One-Eye escapes his clutches, him and a young boy join a group of Christian Vikings on what was to be a crusade. Instead, they find an unknown new land but they don't seem to fit in...
Nicolas Winding Refn is on fire! This interesting director from Denmark directs this highly atmospheric film. Divided in six chapters, each narrating a different aspect, this film is almost entirely allegoric. Don't try to find a meaning in this film from the start otherwise you'll lose the point. Instead, let it roll and then let it get to you.
Mads Mikkelsen does a great work here. It is impressive how he goes throughout the entire film without even saying one word, letting his expressions and body language do all the work. I value that skill greatly in an actor and even if the film may seem boring at times, Mads takes it up a notch.
Must watch this : on a cold and windy November night, with the window open to let the chill come in. Gather your friends (the ones with whom you have philosophical dialogues), put on some heavy incense, get a cigarette each and a glass of neat alcohol and let the movie you draw you into the mist! After the movie, keep doing whatever you do (smoking, drinking, tripping) with that atmospheric shit !

Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964)

Six random people are lured to a small town in the South where citizens are preparing for the Centennial. The festivity mood intoxicates the six people that have no idea of the reason of the celebration, which is to kill six Yankees as a revenge for the town's destruction during the Civil War...
Considered by many Herschell Gordon Lewis' most complete film, this is one real shocker. Social distortion at its finest, fake blood, gore, South vs. North all set in the beautiful American landscape.Highly entertaining in its essence and most thrilling in its mood, this film may be offensive to many people but then again who cares?
The actors are all B-movie cast (or even C or D) so make no mistake about that. Don't expect something that will change your life but be sure that the actors do their amateur best to portray their characters whether it's an old hillbilly or a frightened girl. In what they do, no one can beat them so fuck Oscars and the likes!
Must watch this : right before you set off for a road trip with your friends to a village in the middle of nowhere. This movie will make you extra suspicious against "them old village peeps". Remember to take knives with you for protection! Why knives and not guns, you'll ask...Gun's for show, knife's for a pro!

The Troll Hunter (2010) a.k.a Trolljegeren

A group of university students is doing a research on some recent mysterious bear killings. In order to find out the truth, they join forces with a self-named hunter. Soon, they will find out the he is indeed a Troll hunter and this is Troll season...
André Øvredal directs this one and he goes all the way. Directed as a "mockumentary" (part of a supposed lost and found tape), this film is downright entertaining and funny in its own cold way. Huge-ass trolls make their appearance in the vast and unfriendly mountaintops of Norway, thirsty for Christina blood and anything they can get. An alternative homage to the country's folklore, this film will not disappoint you unless you are too narrow-minded.
The cast includes some of Norway's most unknown comedians. They seem pretty serious in this film but then again the irony may be that big that I am not getting it. Either way, all actors work their just fine within the passages of the story. A must-see for folklore and mythology fans!
Must watch this : on the coldest, snowy day of the winter (to make you feel the you are indeed in a place like Norway) with a huge bowl of mushroom soup and a big cup of mjod. After the film, go for a long stroll in your nearest mountain to look for mysterious creatures with that cold bastard blasting in your ears.

The Born Losers (1967)

The Born Losers, a vicious biker gang, harasses little towns, raping young girls and causing trouble at their way. Vicki, a young girl biker, gets in their way and she gets a handful of their brutal treatment. The only one has can stop them and avenge Vicky is none other than Billy Jack...
Tom Laughlin stars and directs this rather better-than-average bikersploitation. Introducing the figure of Billy Jack, a halfbreed Indian living outside the law, this film boasts picturesque scenery and imagery that can make your mind travel to the other side of the Earth. Vicious in its essence, bloody and violent in its mood, this film may not be no Easy Rider or Vanishing Point but it sure gets its work done.
Tom Laughlin is far better as a director than he is an actor, which is hard-cast and a bit stiff! Elizabeth James, on the other hand does a much better job in her role as the innocent but ballsy little rich girl that is looking for excitement in all the wrong places. Jeremy Slate is one lawless, nasty motherfucker leader of the biker gang and he sure is something else.
Must watch this : right before going out with a new friend on a hot Saturday night. Grab a beer, your tobacco, your driving vibe and drive out with no particular destination until the early morning hours. If that ain't freedom, then what is?

Daughter of Dracula (1972) a.ka La Fille de Dracula

Upon seeing her grandmother dying, Luisa is told of her family's curse ; they are all vampires. To settle her grief, Luisa decides to stay in the family estate with her uncle and her cousin. Soon she will find out that she can't run away from her family's curse...
The old and tricky Jess Franco we all love strikes back! European finesse and glamor meets a classic horror story with a saucy and sexy twist. This film is highly atmospheric and trippy so be careful not to dive too deep in unknown waters. Gloomy castles, picturesque countryside and weird families with even more weird secrets. With proper amounts of carefully handled nudity and pinches of pure exploitation, this is another must-watch by the notorious Franco!
Britt Nichols, Howard Vernon, Anne Libert and Alberto Dalbés. A classic Franco cast in classic combination. All great actors grasping the story and mood of the film by the balls and shoving heavily psychedelic drugs down its throat. Enjoy with caution.
Must watch this : with a clear mind at first but then be sure to do something that will cloud your senses and let your swim into the perverted lake of dreams that is Franco's films! Accompany with a company in an equal state of mind.

Nude Nuns With Big Guns (2010)

Sister Sarah, a young nun who just took her vows, is brainwashed, drugged and abused in many ways by a corrupt clergy who deals heroine. When a deal goes wrong, she is given to a gang as a prostitute. While on the verge of dying, God sends her a vision and it's time for revenge, the Holy way...
Directed by upcomer Joseph Guzman (his other film being Run! Bitch Run!) this is one hell of a film. Resurrecting the long lost genre of nunsploitation, this film goes all the way giving a lesbian nun tons of guns to revenge her lover and herself. Bikers, drugs, corrupt Christianity, guns...A new era of pure exploitation is upon us!
Asun Ortega is Sister Sarah and although she is really good at it, I would prefer her a little more fierce. David Castro, on the other hand, is the leader of the drug-dealing, motorcycle-riding, pimping gang and you sure don;t want to mess with this guy. He plays so good he convinced me that he is a total dickhead. But he sure gets his share of revenge...
Must watch this : on a really hot summer day with 4 shots of tequila equally administered throughout the film and a bowl of nachos with guakamole. After the film, hit the beach cos' this is what you are supposed to do in the summer, you unsociable  fuck!

Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968)

Monsignor Ernest Mueller performs an exorcism ceremony on the door of Dracula's castle. Little does he know that Count Dracula has risen from the grave and now he wants to take his revenge. He tracks the Monsignor down and sets on making his niece the new Mrs. Dracula...
Another fine addition to the film legend of Dracula. Directed by Freddie Francis and perfectly produced, this film might just be one of the best Dracula films out there. Deep emotion and goth atmosphere with just a little bit of these Italian style colors in the background that make all the difference. It's doom and gloom time...
Who else other than Christopher Lee? This man is the legend himself and no one can walk like him in his big-balled shoes. Especially not when he is surrounded by such great actors like Rupert Davies as the Monsignor, Barry Andrews as Paul and Marion Mathie as the forbidden fruit of lust for Dracula. It is interesting to see such a powerful love story being developed side to side by the world's worst nightmare!
Must watch this : on a cold, windy and foggy January afternoon right at twilight with a cup of the best Earl Grey tea you can get your hands on. Let the wind and fog surround you and drown you in Dracula's mist...MuaHaHaHa

Sin City (2005), by Silent Guardian

Four different stories intertwined , as one continuum, telling stories a corrupt city with even more corrupt citizens. A tough, depraved killer , a blonde angel, the only honest cop in town protecting a young girl from a pedophile, a group of dangerous women and a lot more obscure personalities all collide for survival....
Robert Rodriguez teams up with Frank Miller and Quentin Tarantino to bring to life Miller's famous comic book story. The result is a highly entertaining ,with the dark, monochrome and pulp mood that is prevails in the film. Too rough, too serious, too comic-y...hell yeah! Once you watch this there is no turning back...
Hollywood all-star parade...Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Devon Aoki and Jessica Alba. They all adapt perfectly into the atmosphere, giving their own mysticism to their characters, adding to their delinquency. I would like to see more of them in movies like these...Imaginative and purely artistic.
Must watch this : on a special movie night party just for this film. Gather your friends, booze up and eat up and then chill ritualistically, enjoying this film without talking. After the film, most of the girls of the party will want to strip-tease,so yeah, you can thank me later for that!

Pet Sematary (1989)

Luis Creed and his family move into their new house in Maine. They all seem to adapt pretty well in their new surroundings. Only the road is the one thing that scares them. The road and that Pet Sematary whose powers are about to bring chaos to the Creed family...
Directed by Mary Lambert and based upon the famous horror novel by Stephen King, this film is pure 80's horror. Urban legends, scary cats, 80's hairstyles and 80's special horror effects! There is no reason not to like this film, unless of course if you have read the book. In that case, the film lacks a lot in fulness of the story and continuity. Too bad King's novels didn't better funding!
Dale Midkiff is not so convincing as a Louis but he does his best. Fred Gwynne as Jud and Denise Crosby as Rachel,on the other hand, do a much better job. Miko Hughes present some real talent, even in the age of 30 months (sic). For dedicated viewers only.
Must watch this : on a windy (or rainy), either way will do, November night. Make yourself a nice, hot cup of chocolate and some chocolate cake (American much?) and think of the afterlife while indulging in these pleasures.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Jeffrey Lebowski, or The Dude as they call him, is a victim of mistaken identity when he is taken for Jeffrey Lebowski, a known millionaire. He is soon in the center of numerous stories and misunderstandings and he tries to get out of it with the help of his bowling buddies. The only thing he really wants is his rug back...
The Coen brothers direct the Holy Bible of a stoned generation. Everyday characters on the verge of nervous breakdown trying to figure life out while all they need to do is just chill and have a White Russian. Bowling, joints, alcohol and lives with no clear purpose and a trippy soundtrack to bind all these together. This movie has no actual purpose and that is where its beauty lies...
Jeff Bridges in the role that got him to the state of a cult figure with John Goodman and Steve Buscemi by his side while Philip Seymour Hoffman (R.I.P) , David Huddleston and Julianne Moore fill up the rest of the cast. High-level acting that hits the exact buttons, not the one to make you relate to the characters but the one to make you wanna see yourself in their shoes for once.
Must watch this : you can't watch this without at least 3 White Russians and a packet of cigarettes. And you sure can't watch this if your mind is not chilling in the right place. So lose any anxiety that may poison you and enjoy with your equally tripped-out bros. After the film take a drive out to nowhere with this baby for a soundtrack!

The Walking Dead (1936)

John Ellman has been framed for murder by a gang of racketeers and he is sent to the electric chair. Luckily, Dr. Evan Beaumont retrieves his dead body and revives it as part of his research about body reanimation and the soul. Sooner or later, things go out of control as the dead walk among us...
Michael Curtiz provides yet another classic piece of horror back from the mid-War era. This film (as many others) must have been really shocking back then as it does not only shock with the story but also plants seeds for thoughts. The story, the mood and the gloomy and grainy atmosphere never fails to disappoint. That's why we love it!
Boris Karloff in yet another of his numerous roles as a man that has been brought back to life. He may seem a lot like Frankenstein's monster but haters will hate. Edmund Gwenn as the doctor with the unnatural field of research and Marguerite Churchill fill up the remaining roles here! A classic film for times of relaxing and reminiscing (there is something about black-and-white that does that).
Must watch this : with a hot bowl of soup, next to the fire, with dim lights and your lovey-dovey next to you while the wind is howling outside in the blistering cold. Yikes, I even got the chills just by thinkin' of it.
