Häxan (1922)

As the title says, this movie is something in between a documentary and a movie dealing with the different phases of witchcraft and paganism throughout the ages. The different phases and sections are presented as theatrical sketches.
Benjamin Christensen directs this sick piece of a movie. Dramatized depictions of The Devil, Satan worshiping, witches, madness and other outer-realm horrors dance around on your screen in this film lost in the ages. Its monotonous color and the graininess of the picture brings an interesting mood to it. It actually makes it more scary than it would be and even more scarier and atmospheric than any modern horror film.
I do not know the actors in this film as they are way to old for anyone to know anything about them and because they most probably were mainly theater actors. This indeed can be noticed in their mute acting, as they show great ability and skill and a much more dramatic way of portraying their characters. A great film for all horror lovers.
Must watch this : on a starry summer night, alone in a place of total silence with incense sticks burning. Initiate the unholy ritual by muting the film and have this blasting in the background. Prepare yourself for a long and painful trip into the land of doom.
