20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954)

  Professor Pierre Aronnax and his assistant are sent on a ship to investigate a number of mysterious sinkings. The ship will be sunk by the highly advanced Nautilus, a submarine designed and controlled by Captain Nemo. Captain Nemo will take the professor, his assistant and a random surviving sailor on a trip that will change their lives.
  The classic story by Jules Verne brought to us in the big screen by legendary director Richard Fleischer. Beautiful sets,breathtaking photography and carefully executed special effects, this film respects the legacy of its story. The film is alive with a sentiment of calmness and serenity, depicting in such way the feeling when you get when you are at the sea! Genius...
  James Mason as Captain Nemo, Paul Lukas as Professor Pierre Aronnax, Peter Lorre as Conseil, the professor's assistant, and Kirk Douglas as Ned Land, the sailor. Respected and well- read actors that caught the mood of the story perfectly. Excellent depiction of the characters that clash and compete with one another throughout the film. Makes me think that a remake would ruin everything!
Must watch this : with a glass of juice and a selection of fruits. After the film, go to the beach (boo hoo if you do not have one nearby) and chill by the sound of the waves contemplating the future.

  State of New Mexico. The recent atomic bomb tests may seem innocent but leave a huge danger behind them  ; regular ants affected by radioactivity start to show a weird mutation which allows them to grow massively in size. Out for what they can get, they soon start to pose a threat to humans. Who's gonna stop them?
  Highly prolific director Gordon Douglas comes out with another classic 50's sci-fi craziness. It's all there. Giant ants claim their right in the desert while on a killing spree. Who does that anymore? Besides the entertainment, this kind of films also show the era's anxieties and worries about the environmental change and use of nuclear energy. And this movie tells it exactly! Don't fuck with nature or she will come down hard on you!
  Nothing too shockingly good in acting here (what did you expect from an American film? ) but a more stable quality in overall plot. From the worried scientist to the fearless men fighting the huge ants, everyone acts like they are supposed to. Doing their job in favor of the American dream. So politically correct! Americans,please don't get offended!
Must watch this : with a bottle of Coca Cola or Pepsi (you need to feel as American as you can), in your pajamas, on a cold Sunday afternoon.

Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954)

  A strange prehistoric humanoid is hidden in the depths of the Amazon river. A group of scientists soon discovers its existence and unsuccessfully tries to bring it back to the "civilized" world for studying. They should have known better !
  Shut up hipster, I did not post this here for you! And yes, today was Amazon day! Moving on, introducing the majestic Creature from the Black Lagoon this film is a masterpiece and a classic in its genre. Jack Arnold is no amateur in these stuff as he was already deep into the Sci-Fi before directing this movie. And what he does, he does it good ; underwater shots, carefully chosen scenery and special effects (by that I mean the guy in the costume) as sophisticated as his era suggested! It doesn't get any better than this!
  The main characters are beautifully portrayed by Richard Carlson and Julie Adams (classic 50s American hottie-pie) and a big bravo goes to the creature's performance too (Ok I am just joking)! As you might expect in a film like that, the female and male main characters have a thing going on but the creature (not giving a shit) goes on and has a crush on Kay Lawrence. A good twist, if you ask me!
Must watch this : with your significant other and a pizza on a random night!
