Blacula (1972)

Mamuwalde, an African prince in ancient times, gets bitten by Lord Dracula and turns into a vampire. After his deep slumber, Mamuwalde wakes up 70's Los Angeles ans spreads funky fear and horror as Blacula...
Love or hate blaxploitation, you gotta to admit these guys had some serious sense of humor. Every 60s-70s famous film you think of, you can find its blaxploitation doppelganger. And you just can't but laugh at the wordplay of the original titles. I mean, Blacula? Who ever came up with that. All jokes aside though, director William Crain's only film is considered a blaxploitation classic as well as a comedy horror milestone. So, don't get too judgemental while watching it.
Blacula is played by William Marshall who is not your average low quality actor but a very dynamic personality instead! And since this is a blaxploitation film, you get to see all of these black vampire mamas,
Vonetta McGee and Denise Nicholas. Lastly, for all you Sci-Fi freaks out there, you may even recognize Thalmus Rasulala only without the uniform.
Must watch this : get a motherfuckin' big bucket of supreme K.F.C, a proper manly volume of Pepsi Twist and your super-pumped vaporizer with Vaponaute flavor! Now that's cult, ladies and gentlemen!

Take a Hard Ride (1975)

Pike, an old-time criminal but currently honest worker, goes on a suicide mission to deliver $86,000 in payroll money to a ranch in Sonora, Mexico. His road meets with Tyree's, a no-good gambler who seems to want to get his hands on the cash and they both encounter desperate prostitute Catherine and her loyal ace martial artist half-breed companion Kashtok. Now, they both have to pass through the dangerous desert, facing Kiefe's wrath...
Director Antonio Margheriti experiments with the mix of western and blaxploitation almost 40 years before Tarantino did. The result is  downright entertaining as Margheriti succeeds in maintaining every element of a western film that makes us happy but adding to it the easybreezy mood of a blaxploitation. Get ready for shootouts, desert, money, dynamite and lots of trash talk puns!
A big plus for this film is the incredible energy between Jim Brown and Fred Williamson. Their chemistry is amazingly vivid throughout the film and certainly brings a feeling of true comradeship. Also amazing is the performance of Lee Van Cleef, the bad guy with the killer look and the million ways to kill you. Completing the cast is Catherine Spaak as the prostitute and Jim Kelly, the famous karate master, as her martially skilled companion. A fine choice of actors for a fine film!
Must watch this : on a really hot summer day with a two glasses of iced tea and a cigar. After the film do yourself a favor, get in your car and start going for the nearest beach and have this fiery bullet playing while you speed down the road!

Coffy (1973)

Coffy is a young and beautiful nurse who finds out that her little sister has been pushed to dope by a greedy pusher. Seeking justice, she kills him and then proceeds to take on the rest of pushers and druglords she can get her hands on. Little does she know that the corruption scheme to cover up the whole business affects her even more she would like to...
Notable cult director Jack Hill directs this blaxploitation jewel and gives the chance to Pam Grier to become the Black Queen of Violence she set out to become. Fast-paced action and witty (but not cheesy) dialogues in a socially corrupt background! Fast cars, guns, lethal women and easy men all under a glorious funky soundtrack! Welcome to Black Violence!
Pam Grier is magnificent as always, giving a new meaning to the term ebony goddess. If all the supposed feminists out there were more like the characters she impersonates then there wouldn't any issue about gender equality. Booker Bradshaw also does as a co-starring actor and so does the rest of the cast like Robert Doqui, Sid Haig and William Elliott.
Must watch this : on a hot summer night with some fried chicken and a glass of Southern Comfort, alone or with company that is worth it. After the film, consider who are the people in your life for whom you would reach the edge of yourself and try to determine that edge!

Friday Foster (1975)

Friday Foster, a beautiful photographer, witnesses two murders : that of the richest African American and that of her friend. Soon, she finds herself targeted for assassination and teams up with detective Colt Hawkins to uncover one of the biggest political scams...
Arthur Marks, known TV and exploitation director, brings us another Blaxploitation masterpiece filled with dark and darker twists in the plot. All the Blaxploitation necessities are here to represent ; swinging mood, pimped cars and more pimped clubs, strong women and dangerous men raised up in the hood, gunfights, awesome soundtrack and degradation of the white race! It just doesn't get any better than that but if you are too politically correct, step aside!
Pam Grier could not be absent from that film, especially not when she has interpreted so many Blaxploitation roles so convincingly! Friday Foster (previously a comic character) is one smart lady that had to be broken out of her soft woman cocoon and take the law in her hands. Legendary Yaphet Kotto stands proudly by her side, bringing a whole new vibe to the film (and not just the pro-feminist vibe of other Grier films) as he portrays his version of hard-mother-fucker-ness!
Must watch this : with a whole bucket of K.F.C and plenty of Southern Comfort on the rocks. Get a lady friend (or your best friends) to watch it with you and after the film chill out with good funky music like that soul-y motherfucker !

Night of the Animals (1971)

Two prisoners, Lee and Harold, break out from the prison they were kept in. Joan joins them in their sadistic adventure that follows. They break in the house of Stanley and his family and after they are done abusing them verbally and physically, they force them into uncanny sexual acts..
Interesting piece of exploitation straight from the depths of sleaziness and bad taste. Lee Taylor directs this one and it was probably all he ever did in the movie business. It would be a shame to let it pass, right? The film is the definition of exploitation with anti-hero characters, a doubtful existence of a story, lots of sex and even more violence. Recommended for the fans of the kind.
The actors in this film really the performance of their lifetimes, that is because it was the only movie they played in. So, they had to make it count. Don't expect much from acting here, except from the usual semi-erotic faces and nudity.
Must watch this : grab a nice cold beer, gather your scumbag friends and watch this. Let the sleaziness flow through you.

Across 110th Street (1972)

Two amateur, small-time crooks go on and try to rob the Mafia off 300,000 $. Two cops (old-timer white cop and young black cop) put aside their differences and try to stop while trying to prevent a gang war. Black vs. White vs. crime!
A Blaxploitation movie but with a better budget ( thank MGM). Barry Shear (almost entirely worked on television) directs this softer Blaxploitation (by softer I mean it has white good guys too) and brings a new life and breeze to the genre. The director has actually managed to portray not only the two-ways racism between white and black folk but also has tried to convey some between-the-lines anti-racism messages. This movie is pure entertainment with gunshots and car chases but has some good thinking food too. Look out for the soundtrack too (classic funky jazz) !
Anthony Quinn along with Yaphet Kotto play the hard-boiled, unconventional crime-fighting duo. No need to address either one of them as they are notorious in the badass section of men roles. Quinn with his mature,world-hating, old-school ways and Kotto with his muscular, active overdrive to fight crime! A must-see for classic film appreciators.
Must watch this : dressed up with your fancy suit and Fedora hat, with a glass of good whiskey, a fine cigar and an even finer ebony prostitute! Only way to catch the Black Mafia vibe. Get your funk on!

Abby (1974)

Meet Abby, a young, beautiful clack marriage counselor. Well, all that is about to change when her father-in-law releases a Demon of Sexuality by mistake while in Africa. When he finds out what he has done to her, he tries to perform an African Exorcism (he is an exorcist too) with the aid of his son and a policemen.
A blaxploitation remake of The Exorcist, by a classic blaxploitation director (William Girdler) with an all-black cast and even a black equivalent to exorcism. It doesn't get any more cheesy than that! This film is so ironic to the point it stops being ironic and it takes itself seriously sometimes! If you are not too mainstream and want to have a good time, do yourself a favor and watch this!
It is amazing that there is a specific cast that plays in most blaxploitaiton films! I mean, same actors different roles, same places but still too cool to care. Carol Speed is Abby in this one (and someone else in other blaxploitation) and is quite cute until she begins to change. There is a specific moment in the exorcism where the demon speaks foreign languages via her body and at some point she speaks Greek (as in the original Exorcist). The point is that one would expect some pretty dark, diabolic, ancient Greek speech but no! They picked out the most random, hillbilly Greek guy they could find in town and told him to just say some words (sic)! This is pure exploitation everybody! Love it or hate it!
Must watch this : if you have watched The Exorcist recently. If you are Greek (or speak Greek) get a lot of souvlaki and friends, watch this and wait for the epic part! Otherwise, just get junk food have a good (laugh) time!
