Enter The Dragon (1973)

A young kung fu master agrees to work with the C.I.A and is sent on a private island owned by a crime lord. There, he will take part in the martial arts championship but also spy on the illegal activities that take part on the island...
It's really something when a martial arts film is not just an excuse for showing off the actor's skills. That is the case here! A somewhat classic story without many cliches that hits all the right spots for film lovers. Robert Clouse made sure he also put the right elements of exploitation so this film practically is all a man can need ; ass-kicking, good vs. evil, some hot chicks and some more ass-whooping.
Bruce Lee is undoubtedly one of the best martial artist to hit the big screen. He made historical changes in the way the western world sees martial arts and planted a fighter worm in everyone who watched his films. All of his expertise and chi has given him an extra cocky attitude that is obvious in his acting. Maybe too cocky, if you ask me but anyway. John Saxon and Jim Kelly are also great (in the same league of actors as  Lee) and especially Kelly, who combines jumping style fighting and street gangsta swag.
Must watch this :  together with your kung fu master and your clan of devoted warriors.

The Wicker Man (1973)

A policeman is sent via seaplane to a Scottish island where a young girl is supposed to be reported missing. The few people living on the island are more than unwilling to help him find the girl. When the pieces of the puzzle start falling together, the policeman will hope he had never set foot on the island...
Robin Hardy had a great vision when he first wrote and directed this film. Even now, 41 years later, this director has not stopped working on this film's sequels so as to complete his so-dreamed of trilogy. Combining such thrilling themes as modern paganism and bloody pagan rites, the Wicker Man never lets the viewer drift off from the amazing mystery mood. An amazing soundtrack was written to accompany this "nature-loving, people-burning, orgy-organizing" film along its stony way. Too bad it was remade with Nicholas Cage starring in it!
Edward Woodward is simply amazing and manages to portray vividly the anger, fury, anxiety and devotion of a strict police officer in a mouse-and-cat chase. Christopher Lee takes a different road than the one we have known him for and does his trick again; legend has it he never accepted any payment for his performance. And since it's a British film and it's the sexy 70's Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento and Ingrid Pitt could not be absent from this flesh feast!
Must watch this :  naked and au naturelle on a sunny spring afternoon preferably on the first of May. Watch it alone or with a female companion and of course the obligatory fruits, bread and wine in order to sacrifice on the Walpurgisnacht to please the gods of fertility.

Ceremonia Sangrienta (1973) a.k.a The Legend of Blood Castle

An ageing cursed Countess finds that the blood of young women seems to restore her long lost youth and beauty. She falls in love with a young man whom she gets to bring her fresh dead girls using his vampiric curse and her thirst for blood never ends...
Quality horror director Jorge Grau leaves his mark on yet another jaw-dropping film. The film narrates the story of Countess Bathory who allegedly bathed in the blood of young girls in order to stay young. Using a profound heavy atmosphere with silent and slow dialogues, the Grau manages to create a beautiful frightening  mood, like a sense that someone is after you. There is some nudity (of course, this is Europe) and some delightfully handled gore that definitely adds to the Gothic morale of the film.
Lucia Boséius just the right person for playing Erzebeth Bathory. Her posture is magnificent and she seems to move like a real Countess. Espartaco Santoni is not such a good vampire but he gives real credit to his character while Ewa Aulin is the classic minx that can make even living dead fall in love with her. If it weren't for the actors' serious performances, the film would have been much more trashy and the whole horror quality would have been thrown down the drain!
Must watch this : on a rainy October night, alone with only a glass of sweet red wine.

Horror Hospital (1973)

When Jason Jones' attempts to make it big in the music scene fail miserably, he decides to let off some steam at a "health farm" named Brittlehurst Manor. On his way there, he meets beautiful Judy who is travelling to the same place and together they will start finding out that Brittlehurst Manor is a lot more sinister than just a holiday farm...
British exploitation master Antony Balch directed only a few films but his work in the underground cinema field was of much greater importance. Within his directing work, Horror Hospital seems to be the most cult. Grasping the 70's groovy mood by the balls and injecting numerous milligrams of horror exploitation and Sci-Fi madness, Balch delivers an outrageous mix of adventure and fiction horror that few thinking people won't like!
Robin Askwith plays the easy-groovin' hipster of the 70's whose chance to be a pop star was blown but he just does not give up and like the stupid hipster that he is he goes to the most evil place he could find. Vanessa Shaw is the same-minded minx that follows him on the adventure of escaping the evil mastermind Dr. Storm, vividly played by Michael Gough. A fully functional cast for a story worth it!
Must watch this : with a bowl of supreme dirty skunk straight from the streets of dirty London and whole bags of the best worst junk order-out food you can find in England. You must watch this within U.K borders in order to feel its atmosphere fully!

Serpico (1973)

The film tells the true story of Frank Serpico, a young police officer who is more than ambitious to become a detective. Working his way up to his target, he realizes his line of work is full of corrupt policemen. Serpico goes on and uncovers one of the biggest corruption schemes in the force and becomes a bad guy for all his comrades...
Al Pacino in his golden years in a film directed by Sidney Lumet. You know what you are getting! Intense emotional escalation and vivid and realistic characters in a story that is more true than the air that we breathe. Serpico was way ahead of its time but still belongs in its time. Had it been filmed in another era, it wouldn't even shake a leaf. So, perfectly positioned in a transcending time of the human race and exploiting basic issues of the times (racism, xenophobia, corruption and dignity), this film manages to give a strong kick in the balls of the educated viewer.
Al Pacino is the ever-clean cop with a vision of a fair and respectful police force that watches as his hope fades away within thousands of dirty dollars. Facing many double-faced corrupt colleagues, he goes and does what he must with the help of his trusted friends like Tony Roberts and John Randolph. His devotion almost has him killed but after all who doesn't want to be the Serpico in his line of work?
Must watch this : on a random night with the drink of your choice and a fine female company by your side. It's a good start to not scare her with your taste in films!

The Inconsolable Widow Thanks All Those Who Consoled Her (1973) a.k.a La Vedova Inconsolabile Ringrazia Quanti La Consolarono

Catarina Prevosti's husband get tragically killed in a car accident and leaves her with grief and a huge amount of cash that legally is not hers. In order to get hold of the money, her plotting mother will convince her to get pregnant within a month and convince the lawyers that she is carrying her late husband's baby...
Italian producers and directors said let's thrive in another genre besides Giallo, Horror and Western and so they started to experiment with Sex Comedies. This film here is a fine example of this genre since it's both exploitation and somewhat of quality. Mariano Laurenti directs and the story falls in the same category with American Pie but with the distinctive difference that this one here took actual humans to write and there is a hint of a twisted plot. So, if you are open-minded enough to take a lewd sexual pun or two and you are ready to laugh with stretched social situations, give it a try.
Edwige Fenech is delightful to watch and goes smoothly from a poor widow with an apt for good acting to a bitch that has to have her money. I wouldn't want her to be my wife (I wouldn't mind something else, though), that's for sure! Carlo Giuffrè, Didi Perego, Guido Leontini and Pino Ferrara all bind perfectly together in this tragic/comical 98 minutes filled with steamy vibrations.
Must watch this : with Italian friends, thin crust pizza and lemonade on a random summer evening.

The Exorcist (1973)

A young girl starts behaving unnaturally and her mother is convinced that she is possessed by some demonic entity. The mother asks the help of two priests who agree to perform the ritual of exorcism on the girl. But first they must test the depths of their faith in God...
Totally groundbreaking in its time and still preserving its horror glory, The Exorcist is a film that with few special effects will manage to spook you out of your clothes. Directed by an already pro director back then, William Friedkin, this film paved the way for various other films of the same theme and is allegedly responsible for multiple massive social freakouts back in the 70s and not only for his world famous them song! A must see for anyone anywhere!
Jason Miller has the lead role as Father Karras, a priest who seems to have lost his faith in God but manages to find it again through the hard practice of exorcism. A role that was intended for Jack Nicholson, Miller seems to make it his own! Max von Sydow helps him along the way but does not seem to hold well exorcising young Linda Blair, a sometimes beautiful but sometimes fucked-up possessed kid! Maybe it's all because of her stuck-up mother, Ellen Bursty. Who knows!?
Must watch this :  with an empty stomach because sensitive or not, this film contains some scenes that shake up the urge for vomit! Dim the lights, light up some candles and enjoy on a breezy autumn night!

Sweet Sugar (1973)

Street walker Sugar is set up and sent to a chain gang for possessing illegal drugs. At first, she seems to blend in well with the rest of the inmates but soon she will find out the true nature of the facility and the true intentions of Dr. John, the man who runs the place...
Within the short career of Michel Levesque as a director, humanity was given two instant cult classics. Werewolves on Wheels and that film. Beautifully made and rough around the edges, this film is guaranteed entertainment. It's one of these cases that you know you are about to see everything; action, violence, topless scenes from all the female cast, cheesy lines, lesbianism and a smooth theme song.
Phyllis Davis and Ella Edwards team up good as Sugar and Simone. Their chemistry works well as a women-in-prison duo although I would prefer Davis to be more ferocious. Angus Duncan is the mad doctor that performs experiments on the girls and he is oddly unsettling while Cliff Osmond is one sadistic motherfucker. A funny addition by Albert Cole, a sleazy hustler who tries to get stupid little James Houghton laid!
Must watch this : on a hot summer night when you have nothing better to do. Order up a manly hamburger with fries, call up the dudes and enjoy this film like you should.

Cannibal Girls (1973)

Young Gloria and Clifford are on a road trip out in the snowy nature. When they get in a dire need of a place to sleep, they find a restaurant/guest house to spend the night and maybe some days. They learn about a local legend that has this guest house being occupied by three women that ate human flesh. Soon, they will find out that this is no fantasy...
Ivan Reitman had other film successes before Ghostbusters. This movie is not one of them! Lacking seriously in plot and investing greatly on the weirdness of its story, this film fails to stand out as a horror exploitation. Nevertheless, that does not mean that this film does not create a great atmosphere of pure sleaze with periodic breaks of uneasy gore! Another ultra low-budget time waster!
Andrea Martin and Eugene Levy play the protagonist couple. There is something weird going on between them. While their weirdo chemistry is great, their movements and reactions are as frigid as that of a woman from Central Europe! Randall Carpenter, Bonnie Neilson and Mira Pawluk are the three blood-thirsty chicks that even bother to cook their own meal! Exploitation actors for exploitation movies!
Must watch this : on a cold autumn night with hot dogs, coca cola and your girlfriend. Pay no attention to her refusing to watch this and put it on anyway. Feel your victory as she sleeps in your arms and you are still watching this. Then, worry about how sick and psycho you are!

Coffy (1973)

Coffy is a young and beautiful nurse who finds out that her little sister has been pushed to dope by a greedy pusher. Seeking justice, she kills him and then proceeds to take on the rest of pushers and druglords she can get her hands on. Little does she know that the corruption scheme to cover up the whole business affects her even more she would like to...
Notable cult director Jack Hill directs this blaxploitation jewel and gives the chance to Pam Grier to become the Black Queen of Violence she set out to become. Fast-paced action and witty (but not cheesy) dialogues in a socially corrupt background! Fast cars, guns, lethal women and easy men all under a glorious funky soundtrack! Welcome to Black Violence!
Pam Grier is magnificent as always, giving a new meaning to the term ebony goddess. If all the supposed feminists out there were more like the characters she impersonates then there wouldn't any issue about gender equality. Booker Bradshaw also does as a co-starring actor and so does the rest of the cast like Robert Doqui, Sid Haig and William Elliott.
Must watch this : on a hot summer night with some fried chicken and a glass of Southern Comfort, alone or with company that is worth it. After the film, consider who are the people in your life for whom you would reach the edge of yourself and try to determine that edge!

Diary of a Nymphomaniac (1973) a.k.a Le Journal Intime D'Une Nymphomane

A young girl, Linda, works at a bar as part of a lesbian duo show. One night she picks up Ortiz from the bar, seduces him to her room and proceeds to commit suicide right after calling the police. Ortiz is suddenly held responsible for her death. But dark secrets are about to unfold and Ortiz may not be so innocent after all...
Jess Franco is one nasty motherfucker and he proves it anyway he can. 41 years before Lars von Trier, Franco gives us his own version of what a nympho is and the result really blows your mind. Dreamy photography as the camera idly and drunk swings among the delinquent characters in this poem of European sensual filth!
Montserrat Prous plays the seductive Linda and Manuel Pereiro is the unlucky Ortiz who probably got what he deserved. Mixed up in this is also Ortiz's wife played by Jacqueline Laurent, a lesbian countess played by Anne Libert and Linda's partner Maria Toledano impersonated by Kali Hansa. All blend perfectly and make this movies the perverted masterpiece it is. As usual, most female actors are nude or semi-nude throughout the film, so prude douchebags and extreme feminists back off! This is for the open minded!
Must watch this : right when summer starts making its first appearances. Set the mood with that saucy temptress, get a cocktail or just a beer and get high on this film, thinking of all the sex you are (not) going to have this summer. Daydream of how it would be to meet a nympho and how it would affect. Who knows, you might even get lucky!

She Devils of the SS (1973) a.k.a Eine Armee Gretchen

In the end of World War II, German girls start volunteering to serve in the front lines. Their mission is to help not by fighting but by having sex with the "brave" Nazi soldiers. Things are going pretty well until they get really complicated when the Soviet army is marching upon them.
Erwin C. Dietrich is a real sick bastard! This film is nothing but exploitation of the most offensive kind. Indeed, She Devils of the SS are way more offensive on the matter than most other Nazisploitation film and the reason is that Nazi soldiers are portrayed as good guys! Combine that with sex in the Dietrich way and goofy characters and ta daa!
I am not going to talk about acting as the film's characters are not ones to remember any other way than "the general", "the blonde", "the brunette with the nice tits"...So, if you were looking for high-class acting, walk away. The effects and costumes,on the other hand, are quite impressive, handled with vivid colors that actually recreate the era's mood!
Must watch this : I would not recommend this for any other reason other than for the experience. So, if you have to watch this, do it with a pint of German Weissbier and a selection of fine sausages, with or without your Nazi mustache on.

The Sinful Dwarf (1973) a.k.a Dværgen

Olaf and his mother are far more than your ordinary landlords; they run a white slavery ring and use some girls for their brothel in their basement. They also smuggle heroin to keep their victims dazed and confused. Peter and Mary, a young couple, have just checked in the boarding house of their nightmares...
This the lowdown of real degradation. Vidal Raski's only film is a sinful trip to the underground of  European classiness, filled with forced prostitution, drug smuggle and abuse and lots of violence. Considered by many the finest example of Eurosleaze, this film is not for the fainthearted as it exceeds in sex, violence and extremely tense scenes. Check it out at your own risk!
Hats off to Torben Bille for surpassing any taboos about his height and everything and truly giving a most frightful depiction of his character. It takes a lot of gut to star in a film that actually exploits your 'posture' to add to its cache, without respecting much either! Tony Eades and Anne Sparrow do a great job too, being the love couple that humps everywhere they can.
Must watch this : with a really short friend of yours so that you can make (benevolent) fun of their height. Accompany with herbal tea and chocolate cake on random cold night!
