Rocky (1976)

A small-time mob muscle man and an aspiring boxer, Rocky Balboa, spends most of his time practising and unsuccessfully hitting on his friend's sister. Life gives him a chance to make it big when a world boxing champion wants to meet him in the ring. While this is a suicide mission, Rocky has to prove to everyone that there is always point in trying your best...
This is one of the landmarks of modern cinema! Sylvester Stallone really risked his life trying to get this movie screened and that is something you can actually sense throughout the film; an air of fighting freedom, when there is nothing left to be lost so one can only win. John G. Avildsen and his directing helped put all the emotions in an acceptable order and the result is as beautiful as a flawless uppercut. the film also boasts vivid imagery throughout the film (the slums, the gym, the miserable housing, the fights) and the intense feelings get even more intense. All in all, Rocky is an icon and this film is a pure example of how all success stories have to begin, endless fight and hardships with sprinkles of persistence through bad luck.
Stallone is not the finest actor in general and he is not the best actor in this film either. Not trying to undermine Stallone but the rest of the cast is actually more impressive! Tali Shire manages to uplift her role to a whole other level when you see her character actually evolving from a shy girl to a full woman next to Rocky. Burt Young plays one of those lowlife guys who snatch away at anything small-time to get by. And I tell you there are a few guys who can play that part that well! Carl Weathers is a good example of a character spinning around his own success and seeking his demise while Burgess Meredith is the finest of them all. The most cult, the the most insulting, the most raw character/actor in this film and you can't but love him!
Must watch this :  right before you make the final decision of really stepping forward in your life. Mix up "The Champion's Breakfast" right after the film and go out to face the world and own it!
