One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

Rebel with no cause McMurphy enters a mental institution in an effort to avoid ordinary punishment for his crimes. Not standing any form of incarceration, he will start creating anarchy and obstacles for the oppressing doctors. The fellow voluntary patients start to like him and take him as their leader...
This film is a very important landmark in modern cinema. Like many other films in the 70's, One Flew Over... examines the vast subject of mental illnesses but the director was clever enough not to leave it there. Milos Forman goes another step forward and leaves subtle comments on how modern society confronts mental illnesses and a sad realization on who is really free and happy.
Jack Nicholson was already a very active actor by then but this film was just another proof of his great talent. I can't really tell if his character is crazy or just faking it and that is just exactly the point of it all! The rest of the cast is equally and maybe even more exceptional ; Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Sydney Lassick, Brad Dourif, Will Sampson, William Redfield and super-bitch Louise Fletcher.
Must watch this :  besides its seemingly depressive mood, this film is actually a shine of hope in the darkness. You can watch it in times of bad mood and I promise it will leave you with a sense of bittersweet happiness!

Easy Rider (1969)

Two biker friends, Wyatt and Billy, travel from Los Angeles to New Orleans and find themselves in various situations and trouble, all in favor of each finding himself and the meaning of life.
A true landmark in modern American cinema from a time that Hollywood still produced some quality films. Dennis Hopper directs this with the help of Peter Fonda and Terry Southern and the result is something more than great. More than a study on 70s counterculture (drugs, bikes, communal living, question of morality etc) this film is a study on modern western society and the dead-ends and barriers it sets in peoples lives. Another ode to freedom and inner search (along with Vanishing Point) with the soundtrack it deserves, this is one of my personal favorites.
Young Jack  Nicholson makes his appearance here too. He plays a drunk, small -time lawyer who decides to follow main characters played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper on their pointless trip. Heavy performances by all actors, especially in the scenes of awkward silence between them after their discussions. A hard ending too, hits you right in your dreams!*Fun fact-the drugs used in the making of this film are real, so yes you can see Jack Nicholson trying to smoke pot.
Must watch this : questioning your society's morals and laws. Grab a beer or a glass of bourbon and take the wheel! For the afterburner, listen to this .
