No Country For Old Men (2007)

A hunter comes across a drug deal gone wrong and manages to snatch a briefcase full of money. Soon, a ruthless hitman who enjoys his job too much will be assigned to take him out. A primitively violent chase ensues...
Something about the Coen brothers appears to be really sick and twisted and I mean it in the best of ways. Meaning, it takes a lot of ingenuity to film a movie like that but still in the end to be so ruthless as to deprive bot the viewer and the characters any consolation. Not to be misunderstood, this movie is a real piece of art but to enjoy it, buckle with patience and a more Taoist approach to viewing life and art.
Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Woody Harrelson, Tommy Lee Jones and Kelly Macdonald. If it wasn't for such a cast, this film would not have been the same. Bardem's eyes are filled with a dark, unearthly thirst for murder while Brolin's gives off an air of "I got nothing to lose since I am already lost". Plus points for Tommy Lee Jones' amazing, rusty voice that is like a drone note giving you the heart note of the musical piece that is this film.
Must watch this : alone, definitely alone. With a cup of American coffee even if it's in the middle of the night.

O Brother, Where Art Thou (2000)

Three escaped convicts start a desperate hunt for a supposed treasure. Their way is hindered by crooked politicians, the KKK, giant con men, luring witches and a lawman that takes his job way too seriously. Not being the smartest of the lot, they stumble in each and every step of their way but they finally get to taste happiness in the American South of the Great Depression...
Joel and Ethan Coen once again collaborate and direct this feel-good adventure! Greatly inspired by Homers' Odyssey, this film is highly allegoric and you can find a meaning/connection with everything in it. Great figures an historic landmarks are depicted in this film, disguised and masked to fit inside the film's era. The Devil, Ulysses, Robert Johnson, Poseidon, the KKK and a country in the process of changing all bind together smoothly under the fine orders of the Coen brothers and a soundtrack that could not be any better for this film.
George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson play the three main characters, the convicts that are after the treasure but only find failure and trouble along their way. John Goodman has the small supporting role of a big bodied racist mugger and con man, Chris Thomas King is the skilled bluesman who gets stuck with the convicts and Daniel von Bargen is the Devil himself.
Must watch this : on a cool breezy night with the only light being that of a candle, heavy tobacco, a glass of heavier whiskey and a true friend. Let the film take you in its comforting vortex and feel vulnerable and mortal while you consume the tobacco and whiskey. After the film, oblige in that grassy tune and talk about life and how simple it is while we stupidly make it more complex!

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Jeffrey Lebowski, or The Dude as they call him, is a victim of mistaken identity when he is taken for Jeffrey Lebowski, a known millionaire. He is soon in the center of numerous stories and misunderstandings and he tries to get out of it with the help of his bowling buddies. The only thing he really wants is his rug back...
The Coen brothers direct the Holy Bible of a stoned generation. Everyday characters on the verge of nervous breakdown trying to figure life out while all they need to do is just chill and have a White Russian. Bowling, joints, alcohol and lives with no clear purpose and a trippy soundtrack to bind all these together. This movie has no actual purpose and that is where its beauty lies...
Jeff Bridges in the role that got him to the state of a cult figure with John Goodman and Steve Buscemi by his side while Philip Seymour Hoffman (R.I.P) , David Huddleston and Julianne Moore fill up the rest of the cast. High-level acting that hits the exact buttons, not the one to make you relate to the characters but the one to make you wanna see yourself in their shoes for once.
Must watch this : you can't watch this without at least 3 White Russians and a packet of cigarettes. And you sure can't watch this if your mind is not chilling in the right place. So lose any anxiety that may poison you and enjoy with your equally tripped-out bros. After the film take a drive out to nowhere with this baby for a soundtrack!
