Yojimbo (1961)

A wandering ronin arrives in a small town that has plunged into ruination after two opposite gangs have settled there. The ronin finds himself in the middle of an ongoing war and has to pick sides. Eventually he chooses the right side, his own...
Critically acclaimed Akira Kurosawa directs this classic Jidaigeki (a.k.a period drama) and God damn if this isn't good! Considered by many the point of reference (alongside other films of the genre) for many outstanding spaghetti westerns, this film pays respect to the forgotten ways of master-less samurais and their times. Amazing settings and costumes, incredible atmosphere (it's like time-travel) and a story as heavy as the hero's balls!
Any Japanese film that respects itself has a cast that respects itself too. Thankfully, that's the deal with this film too! Toshirô Mifune plays an incredible macho ronin with a glance as scary as a samurai demon and rage as fierce as the Japanese wind. By his side, an amazing,  highly acclaimed cast from which Tatsuya Nakadai stands out, as the arch enemy and only worth opponent of the hero.
Must watch this : on a windy autumn night, with the wind howling wildly out your window. Dim the lights, have some incense burning, get a cup of Japanese herbal tea and a bigger cup of sake. Let the liquids drown you slowly in the film's mood while you seek to find your inner vicious man inside you!

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Alex, a delinquent young man in a dystopian Britain, likes to take drugs and commit random violent crimes every night with his gang. When he is finally imprisoned, he becomes the guinea pig of a new rehabilitation treatment that more or less has him brainwashed...
Stanley Kubrick needs no special introduction, especially not when he has directed such film. Artsy in its essence, visually heavy and violent in its mood and even heavier in the processing of its story, this film combines the era's psychedelic/chaotic mood with conspiracy theories and fear for the future. Certainly not a film for immature viewers.
Malcolm McDowell does an excellent job portraying the character of Alex in every sense. There are times that you can actually witness the satisfaction of crime and the devilish fire in the eyes of the actor, something that truly surprised me! The movie revolves around this character so no actual place is left for other actors to unwind. Even so, you get the sense that no actor was in the cast by luck...
Must watch this : with the friends with whom you talk about all the serious shit that you can't talk with anyone else (afterlife, politics, conspiracies, para-psychology etc). Get some sweet alcohol, cigarettes and a dark room and let the movie take you in its uncomfortable trip.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Young girl Annie is hired to work at Camp Crystal Lake. She and the rest of the camp counselors make the needed preparations for the camp's reopening. Little do they know that someone is lurking in the woods to get his revenge...
Sean S. Cunningham directs this notable classic 80's slasher piece. Friday the 13th alongside with Nightmare on Elm street set out to become two of the most high-grossing horror franchises, uplifting the slasher genre to higher grounds. Uniquely atmospheric and quietly ominous, this movie is sure to give you the chills.
Though not something exceptional, acting in this film is slightly better than the rest of its kin. Adrienne King proves to be a rather good and cute scream queen while Betsy Palmer is psychotically scary even in her small appearance.Robbi Morgan  and young Kevin Bacon fill up the rest of the seats!
Must watch this : on a hot summer night, on the balcony, with cool iced tea and your girl. Be the man of the situation and hug her as she gets scared but try to hide your own fears as well. Then, go to the woods and try to have the most scared-scary sex of your lives!

A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

A group of teenagers in a small American town start having very vivid nightmares. They discover that all of them dream of the same man, a slim figure with a burned face and blades on his fingers. When the dreams start getting too real, the truth must come out...
Wes Craven was already a known reference in his genre when directed this classic film. Exploiting the scary realm of dreams, this film builds up a fantastic atmosphere with thrilling action and lots of blood all along the way. The horror essence of this film lies beautifully on making you think what if it happened to you and it is probably why it was so successful!
Young Johnny Depp in his big early steps along with Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss and some other people. The acting is somewhat disappointing (for my taste), especially when you get a story like that to acto on. Classic American acting with no sharp edges or waves, just what you paid for ! But don't let that draw you off this film. It is worth the time anyway!
Must watch this : with the entire year from your high school as part of reunion. When everyone remembers how making out feels like, you will get your chance to kill everyone you didn't like back then. Hue hue hue hue!

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Two low-life, incredibly stupid, recently unemployed friends decide to go on a cross-country adventure each for his own reasons. Expecting too much from this trip, the two friends will encounter various crazy obstacles as they complex things more than solve them...
The masterpiece of dudes' movies, the must-watch for every goofhead or stoner out there! Directed by the Farelly brothers, this movie tells the story of two friends chasing love and kicks but in the most innocent and light-headed way. Incredible atmosphere and old-school comedy do the best trick to get you laughing your ass off!
Jim Carrey's and Jeff Daniels' combination of unbeatable facial expressions and humorous acting take this movie to another level. Mike Starr follows them quite successfully, until they kill him off (literally) and Lauren Holly is the reason that started the whole adventure in the first place. Awesome actors in a cool-vibe film that will make you forget all your problems!
Must watch this : in the morning, invite one or two friends, make a hefty breakfast with coffee and everything with this smoked-out tune blasting, roll two joints and enjoy the film while you chill heavily. Wake up, it's pot o' clock!!!

Lover of the Monster (1974) a.k.a Le Amanti Del Mostro

The story of a scientist who moves to a new house with his wife to get a fresh start on their problematic marriage. It does not seem like a good start and things get even worse when he discovers some of his father's diaries that turn him into a crazed monster...
Boring at times but certainly unique in most of its aspects, Lover of the Monster was directed by Sergio Garrone. It is in fact a twisted version of the classic novel about Dr. Jekyll and his dive into the abyss of hid mind. Here, the hero goes on a random killing spree while (rightfully) suspecting his wife of cheating on him. You just gotta love the mental atmosphere in these movies...
Klaus Kinski plays the scientist that goes mad and Katia Christine plays the beautiful reason about that! Undoubtedly, this movie would suck even more badly if it wasn't for the almighty Klaus Kinski. Not only does he bring his ghastly mood with him in the film but also manages to freak you out with his eyes and movements. This man was either born a psycho or a really good actor!
Must watch this : with a glass of orange liqueur and some fine salty Italian cheese with the pleasant company of a lady friend. After the film, talk about relationships and cheating.

Indiana Jones and The Raiders of The Lost Ark (1981)

Indiana Jones, famous archeologist and world adventurer, is hired by the U.S government in order to execute a hard mission; he has to find the Ark of the Covenant and has to do so before the Nazis. The search is on and everyone wants his head and the power of the Ark...
Steven Spielberg hits hard with this classic fantasy adventure. At the peak of his long career, Spielberg was not afraid to take small risks to get his way into the mood that he thought was best. And the result is far more than averagely pleasing. Good doses of cheesy and macho humor, fast-pacing action with a nerdy feel to it and lots of exotic places. The best to take your mind away.
Young Harrison Ford works well in the shoes of Indiana Jones while achieving an easy-breezy machoism with a careless, adventurous Don Juan vibe to it. Karen Allen suits Ford just fine as the raunchy feminist with a crush for Jones. Basically, the movie revolves almost entirely around them so there is not much space for other characters.
Must watch this : on a boring and extremely hot summer day, when your responsibilities won't let you escape reality. Make yourself a Mojito (or 2 or 3), sit back and enjoy all the exotic places!
