Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Edward lives in the outskirts of a small American town. up high in a tower. His unique figure doe snot allow him to go out and meet the world ; instead of hands, Edward has scissors. A stroke of luck brings Edward being accepted by a family and venturing his way through modern society...
Tim Burton uses his secret recipe and brings forth a lovely pre-Christmasy movie. Although, Burton could stay on the beaten track and just make another great weird movie like he always does, he strayed off a bit and delved deeper into social and psychological issues. Scissorhands is a fine depiction of the person in all of us who fights to get accepted in society but most of the times the society is not even ready for this little guy. All in all, a great movie about love, acceptance and being unique!
There must be something about Depp and his pick of roles. I mean, you can check every one of his films and you will not find a single role as a normal character. He always goes the extreme way and probably that's we like him. Winona Ryder is exquisite as Depp's forbidden love and we would really love to see that happen. And of course, like in any other love story, there is a douchebag he just won't get out of the way, in this case it's Anthony Michael Hall who plays so could that you can hate him!
Must watch this :  on a cold December night, when your fever is running high and you are trying to lose the shakes by wrapping yourself in blankets. Enjoy with a cup of hot chocolate and after the film, weep for your lost loves, if any!

Dark Shadows (2012)

Barnabas Collins, an imprisoned vampire doomed to eternal life, is woken up after a 200-year sleep.  He returns to what his family's house only to find his descendants having dishonored the family name. Trying to set things right, he meets again the woman that cursed him and she once more tries to stop him from finding true love...
Tim Burton revives a long forgotten television series by the same name that made it big between 1966 and 1971. Being the amazing storyteller that he is, it must have been a piece of cake for Burton to direct this and this is meant both good and bad. For one thing, Dark Shadows is a fun gothicee film with all the right touiches of cult references and a cool soundtrack but at some points it gets too Hollywood even for Burton. Still though, it surely won't make you feel you lost your time!
Where there's Burton, there's always a hint of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter and this film is no exception. Depp stars as the dusty vampire trying to settle in the confusing present, Bella Heathcote plays the girl who will make him fall in love again but Eva Green has other plans for that. Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloë Grace Moretz (dayum) and Gulliver McGrath fill up the rest of the seats on this crazy train!
Must watch this : you should have watched it in the cinema theaters. But if you lost that chance, you can still watch it on DVD on the first rainy days of autumn with a cup of herbal tea or Glühwein.

Beetlejuice (1988)

A young couple dies in a ridiculous accident and return to their home as ghost. They find out that their house is sold to a new family and they do everything they can to get rid of them. In the end, they call for the help of a "bio-exorcist" but they forgot to think about the consequences...
The second actual film of Tim Burton is an entertaining horror/black comedy with tons of enthusiastic innuendos about the after life and what follows. Burton presents his own humorous version of after-life matters and compares the organizing of the issues of the dead with those of a public service. Some interesting stop-motion techniques were used here and so, the film gets a more comic-y side to it. If your sense of humor isn't dark and twisted you may not enjoy this as much. In any other case, dig in!
Michael Keaton of course steals the show as the demonic possession-er that aims to help the dead spook the living. Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are actually entertaining as the newly-dead goofy couple who just don't seem to adapt to the dead lifestyle so good. Winona Ryder is a classic addition since this is a Burton and Glenn Shadix, Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones drop in to give their little weird piece of black comedy!
Must watch this : on a random rainy November weekday when you are exhausted from work. Order some cheap Chinese food and enjoy this one half asleep half unconscious!

Ed Wood (1994)

The story of Ed Wood and how he got from a wannabe director, editor, scriptwriter , etc to the worst director of all times. The story explains how he got his first break, his relationship with Bela Lugosi and Vampira, his strange vice to wear women's clothes and how he finally came to make his best worst film.
Tim Burton decides to take a huge risk and direct the biography (or as close as it can get) of the most notorious filmmaker in the history of world cinema. The movie has a great pace and progress, filled with comedy and weirdness and with enough drama to make you feel melancholic. Interesting narration through the first anxious steps of cinema, an inside view in the problems of film making and funding and a personality that was just too poor for his times and profession.A great film about vanity and how life should be to make your own visions true and not others'.
Johnny Depp in yet another one of his strange roles and he really does it well. He doesn't try to reenact as Ed Wood himself but he tries to portray the strangeness of his personality in his own way. Sarah Jessica Parker is his first wife and in this film she says the best line of her career. Martin Landau is incredible as horror legend Bela Lugosi while Patricia Arquette, Jeffrey Jones and Bill Murray fill the rest of the seats.
Must watch this : on a cool night after a big dinner at a Mexican restaurant and a couple of Margaritas. Let the story of Ed Wood inspire you into starting your life all over again and making it your own this time and do so with that chillout mothermother as a soundtrack!

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Introvert and socially awkward detective Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the the murders of 3 people. All three were beheaded and during his stay there, the bodies start to pile up. Soon, Ichabod will find out that he is in the middle of a carefully planned assassination plan that has much darker motives than he ever thought...
Tim Burton goes beyond all borders and directs probably the best pure horror movie of the 90's. Creating an eerie web of witchcraft and dark folklore and setting it in an atmosphere where grey is the lightest color, Burton manages to give you the creeps without using any cheap tricks. The amazing photography and carefully executed settings make the film more realistic and so believable. The gloomy mood of the film sets the bar high, takes you by the balls and drags you through its muddy forests.
Johnny Depp ,sometimes, is more than the pretty boy that every girl loves. He has great talent when it comes to impersonating weird characters and he is the only one who could star in this film for sure. Christina Ricci and Miranda Richardson are equally good in their roles, giving amazingly heavy performances. Michael Gambon and Christopher Walken complete the cast for this masterpiece of modern goth horror film!
Must watch this : on a frightful night when outside there is heavy, unstoppable rain and strong wind. Dim the lights, lights some candles, make some Bloody Mary and enjoy this with your girlfriend in your arms. Let the weather combine with the movie and put you in its creepy mood.
