The Mission (1986)

A group of Jesuit missionary priests succeeded in building a small community of local tribes that have recently turned to Christianity. Sheltered in the jungle, the mission gives home to a former mercenary who tries to find peace with his crime. When the church decides to break the mission's operation and oust the people, the priests must take a stand...
Roland Joffé delivers a very controversial film. While The Mission's story, cast and starting ambitions are very promising, the progress of the film reveals a different result than the expected. The overall "lesson"of the film is quite mature thought-wise ; the controversy on the subject on what is God's will and what is man's thirst for power? Sadly, the film doe snot get to explore that question adequately and the viewer may be left with a feeling of blankness in the end.
Nevertheless, because this film boasts some very good actors, one can not just turn his look away from it and one shouldn't either. Robert De Niro is a vicious man in love who kills his brother and then gets crazy-guilty about it, Jeremy Irons is a holy man who pays just a little bit too much respect to the human laws, Ray McAnally is the local man in power and hardly cares about what will happen and Liam Nesson in a surprise-surprise role!
Must watch this : if you want to state that "I have watched all of De Niro's films" then you should watch this film on any given chance. Otherwise, watch if you can;t find anything more interesting to watch!

Goodfellas (1990)

Henry Hill, James Conway and Tommy De Vito start from the bottom of the Mafia ladder as teenagers and work their way up through numerous violent deeds and criminal acts. Their 30-year service in the Mafia is violently put to a stop when they start dreaming too big...
Martin Scorcese's thing for Mafia films is more than evident and we certainly can't argue with his addiction. Being a biography, this film focuses on the personalities of the heroes and how they evolve through time and hardships rather than staying on the criminal deeds. Glamor and luxury seem to come and go with money and power but this film reminds that way down the road it's all for nothing! A classic Scorcese!
Ray Liotta steals the show here, even though the rest of the cast is equally talented. His character's way up the Mafia hierarchy and then his way down is vividly portrayed in his expressive face and eyes. Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci are his best friends from the start and just when everything seemed to be getting great, the toll of greed for money and power evens things up...
Must watch this :  on a rainy November afternoon. After the film, make yourself a cup of coffee and sit yourself down and consider why on earth are you still doing what they tell you!

The Deer Hunter (1978)

A group of friends spends their days working at the factory, getting drunk and hunting deers. Three of the friends get drafted fro Vietnam and things change dramatically. Two of them return back live but totally changed and one of them gets stuck in his own hell back in Vietnam...
Michael Cimino may have directed the most epic anti-war film ever made. Much like Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter is a non-stop sequence through intense scenes that put you right into the shoes of the characters. Showing how easily a war can affect even people that are not directly in it, this film draws a fine picture of what the toll of war is to everyday people. Heavily emotional, gloom and ironic in every chance, this is a film not for the faint of heart.
Robert De Niro, in one of his classic and probably best performances, plays a man who is left to carry the weight of war twice around the world in order to save the life of his best friend, Christopher Walken, when he finds out he is still alive in Vietnam. Walken is a magnificent depiction of the psychological effect and derangement of war while John Savage, another friend and survivor, is back home but denied by all of his friends and family. John Cazale is equally stunning as a true ignorant of anything and Meryl Streep swaggers between depression and dean-ends.
Must watch this : if you watch this with people, make sure they are not the loud kind during films. Cook something together and then lets the film's 3 hours drive you into a silent dungeon and fuck you up emotionally. After the film, make sure you use that emotional weight on a constructive dialogue!

Casino (1995)

The story of wo best friends, Sam 'Ace' Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, and how they reached the top of the mafia world starting from small-time thugs to big time corrupt entrepreneurs. A wild ride through money, casinos, gambling, booze, drugs, violence and a trophy wife!
Martin Scorsese definitely has a niche for filming movies about people that came to power by looking down upon the society's laws and how the uphill turned them into greedy monsters that eventually kill their own selves. He certainly does it so poetical;y, though, closely examining each element of their psychosynthesis and portraying its positive and negative side as a harmonious two-steps-forward-three-step back ride to death. Hats off!
Robert DeNiro  and Joe Pesci go together like hamburger goes with fries, like gambling goes with losing. One completes the other in this wheel of fortune that is bound to turn against them. Sharon Stone completes the main cast as the poisonous woman that has to have everything. James Woods, Don Rickles, Frank Vincent and many other classic, mafia faces appear and elevate this movie to the top of the mountain of coke they just imported!
Must watch this : with your best buds only, pizza and  heavy atmosphere. This movie doesn't need any women around, this is about Rocknrollas! After the film, daydream about being out of the law, rich and full of women. Keep daydreaming until it hurts and then listen to that mellow sucka to calm you down.
