Cannibal Ferox (1981)

A group of anthropologists take a journey in the jungles of Colombia hoping to prove that the traditional tribes are not cannibals. They stumble upon a band of drug dealers who use the natives to process the coca leaf. When the natives can't take no more, it's time for a bloody revenge...
Banned in 31 countries until recently, this film is definitely not a treat for the virgin eyes. Umberto Lenzi spares no expenses in making yet another violently shocking cannibal film. The level of gore is more than the average and you get fancy little scenes of random mutilation, torture and some extra violence on animals (the last one is real). It is rightfully considered a classic in its genre but be warned ; if you are used to tomato-style blood in films maybe you are not ready for it yet!
Giovanni Lombardo Radice, Lorraine De Selle, Danilo Mattei, Zora Kerova and Walter Lucchini. It's not a surprise many of the actors in the cast where billed with a fake name. Not all actors were confident enough to be sure that their name in a film of such gore and violence would not hurt their possible careers. Nevertheless, the Italian finesse (even in such a film) is visible in the actors' performances ; you can sense that beneath the filth and shock lies talent!
Must watch this : we all have our violent anger outbreaks every now and then. If not, then I should better check myself. The point is that during those outbreaks when you really need to strangle a motherfucker, it is better to put this film to play. You won;t be hurting anyone but still you will get he satisfaction that somebody is getting it, real hard and painful!

Erotic Nights Of The Living Dead (1980) Le Notti Erotiche Dei Morti Viventi

A land developer buys an island and plans to build and operate a luxury hotel there. He gets to the island with his girlfriend and the captain that took them there. Soon, they meet a voodoo shaman couple who warns them that the island is cursed and staying there will be dangerous...
This might just one of the most intriguing porn movie I have ever seen. And, yes, you got me ; It's a porn film (hardcore) but the profound presence of a story makes you forget all about it! Amazing, idyllic and tropic sceneries make the perfect spot for a porn movie but what happens when voodoo zombies start coming up, hungry for flesh? Well, Joe D'Amato really has the answer but you have to watch it to believe it. It's like a hot-and-cold shower ; one time hot, steamy sex scenes and the other horrifying, gory zombies!
Laura Gemser seems like she was made for such roles! Even when she has to portray zero acting talent, she swags off the scenes with her nudity and amazing blank look on her eyes. George Eastman is also quite enjoyable and he had to be since this is his story, Dirce Funari is a classic minx and Mark Shannon got hired only for his mustache!
Must watch this :  if you watch it alone, it will be an amazing experience, since you will be watching porn with the most amazing plot twist. If you watch it with someone, your girlfriend might be the most suitable person. If she doesn't appreciate it, slap her back to her senses!

Mad Max (1979)

In a dystopian future, policemen struggle to sustain biker gangs that spread anarchy throughout the state. During a chase, officer Max kills the Nightrider, a gang's leader. To take revenge, the gang kills his partner and Max quits out of fear for his family. When, his wife and kid get killed by the gang, Max takes the law in his hands...
The iconic hero persona of Mad Max starts here and gladly came to stay. His story is not one of a kind (it's a classic transform-and-revenge story) but the fact that it is set in the lonely and dangerous Australian desert gives it a whole new perspective. George Miller does not invent the wheel but we sure do like his view on it ; dusty and fast and leather-y with a lot of violence in it and just the perfect Aussie accent to get enough of your attention. If you haven't seen Mad Max, you are just a baby!
Mel Gibson's first boost may as well have been this flick here. Mel gets to practice on his "mad" look and raunchy character but does not go off limits, just enough to make himself a cult icon. Hugh Keays-Byrne gets too theatrical but it's all in the game, since he is the deranged new gang leader, and Steve Bisley is Max's partner who gets his unjust side of the coin. Speaking of cult, I do not think I have seen a more awkward but unique police chief than Roger Ward. Obey the stache!
Must watch this : boring day, boring weather, boring everything. Make a cappuccino, get this playing and drive the boredom away. After the film, get in your car and drive around town hoping you can find some punks to get in trouble with!

The Deer Hunter (1978)

A group of friends spends their days working at the factory, getting drunk and hunting deers. Three of the friends get drafted fro Vietnam and things change dramatically. Two of them return back live but totally changed and one of them gets stuck in his own hell back in Vietnam...
Michael Cimino may have directed the most epic anti-war film ever made. Much like Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter is a non-stop sequence through intense scenes that put you right into the shoes of the characters. Showing how easily a war can affect even people that are not directly in it, this film draws a fine picture of what the toll of war is to everyday people. Heavily emotional, gloom and ironic in every chance, this is a film not for the faint of heart.
Robert De Niro, in one of his classic and probably best performances, plays a man who is left to carry the weight of war twice around the world in order to save the life of his best friend, Christopher Walken, when he finds out he is still alive in Vietnam. Walken is a magnificent depiction of the psychological effect and derangement of war while John Savage, another friend and survivor, is back home but denied by all of his friends and family. John Cazale is equally stunning as a true ignorant of anything and Meryl Streep swaggers between depression and dean-ends.
Must watch this : if you watch this with people, make sure they are not the loud kind during films. Cook something together and then lets the film's 3 hours drive you into a silent dungeon and fuck you up emotionally. After the film, make sure you use that emotional weight on a constructive dialogue!

Wizards (1977)

A magician as old as time lives in the peaceful part of his world but soon his evil brother starts planning to spread the chaos and doom and declares war. The good magician gathers up his team and attempts to restore peace and the balance of magic and technology...
Ralph Bakshi's unique style is something out of the beyond. Considered by some the epitome of his work, Wizards is a funny psychedelic trip through an dystopian land which is divided to two parts; a normal natural part where all the magic creatures live and the nasty part where radiation has led to the creation of mutants. Allegories every second minute and an open connection of the bad guy to Hitler makes this film a delicious food for thought and a real treat for the eyes!
The animation is really something spectacular in this film. I could not help feeling amazed at how warm and yet trippy all the scenes appeared. It is an 80 minute homage to a selection of drugs unknown to humanity now that helped create anything of the third eye we have now. For any fan of animation, this is a classic!
Must watch this : definitely as high as a kite on a rainy and gloomy afternoon!

Bloodsucking Freaks (1976)

Sardu, a theater director, has set up one unique show; he very realistically tortures young women together with this dwarf assistant Ralphus. His audience keeps expanding but little do these people know that Sardu is a masochistic freak who really tortures these women...
An almost exact copy of The Wizard of Gore, this film is not afraid to steal ideas and since it does, it steals from the best. Joel M. Reed may have had a seemingly easy and already done task but he managed to produce a film that could stand on its own or together with its brother, the Wizard. Same amounts of gore and nudity but this one has a much darker and more sinister feel to it. Add the masochistic and caged women stuff and you got yourself a new sick-o!
Seamus O'Brien copies the original Wizard quite well and he even gives his character a more everyday psycho touch to it. Luis De Jesus' figure is cult by default so no arguments there and then there is damsel in distress Viju Krem and Niles McMaster with Dan Fauci who run to her aid! It's all fun and games and blood and BDSM with this group here!
Must watch this :  with a hot plate of spaghetti and red sauce and a glass of red wine on the first rainy day of autumn!
